As addition to their home in a rural area in the midst of Sweden, a young Dutch couple desired a sauna just like any other Scandinavian resident. To accommodate their families, who occasionally visit, a guesthouse / studio was added to the brief. Furthermore, as the client works in the lumber and forestry industry, and to keep the building costs low, the ambition was to create an independent addition that could be self-built with logs which would be sawn from local trees.

The private retreat is build up out of two individual components, which are situated back-to-back. This results in both a flexible arrangement and allows the owners to built these independently and in two phases. The structure is based on the log-home principle tilted on its side; this makes full floor-to-ceiling windows possible without compromising the structure.

Since the sauna part is located on a slight hill the seating steps down accordingly which results in an arrangement which allows the users to always enjoy the view. The studio ends with a higher roof to allow maximum daylight and to make the tall surrounding trees as visible possible.
